Director of Student Conduct and Community StandardsStudent AffairsSearch #21-85ASEARCH DESCRIPTION: This position is responsible for providing leadership for student conduct and community standards including leading a team of professional and paraprofessional staff. The Director leads efforts to promote, enforce, and administer the Student Code of Conduct and promote a safe campus community. The Director is responsible for building strong collaborative partnerships with other units of the Student Affairs Division and other campus stakeholders including legal counsel, Title IX staff, and the University of New Haven Police department. The Director recruits and trains faculty/staff to assume duties as Independent Investigators and decision makers in conduct cases. The Director works with external constituencies such as parents and attorneys. The Director provides mediation services to students as requested.As an integral member of the Division of Student Life, the Director of Student Conduct and Community Standards strives to create a fair and just community by promoting student responsibility, accountability, ethical decision making, and civility.CORE DUTIES:

  • Recruits, hires, trains, and evaluates professional staff members and multiple student leaders. Provides oversight of all conduct cases each year
  • Serve as lead conduct officer for students and student organizations
  • Meet with students and to review the conduct and appeal process in preparation for meetings
  • Serve as an appeal officer for incidents for higher level conduct cases within the community
  • Communicate with students and families regarding interim disciplinary measures
  • Review incident management system (Maxient) for appropriate case distribution
  • Collaborate with conduct officers to determine alleged violations of the code of conduct and sanctions within institutional guidelines
  • Leads educational efforts to ensure that students understand and abide by UNH policies. Leads workshops for students, faculty and staff around the university on complaint procedures, adjudication of cases, rights of all parties in conduct cases, and appeals. Lead efforts to train key stakeholders as needed such as the Student Conduct Board
  • Educate campus community members about standards of behavior expected as stated in the Student Handbook
  • Coordinate the parental notification process for code of conduct community violations and communicates with families regarding student behavior in accordance with FERPA guidelines.
  • Lead the execution and organization of educational-based sanction workshops
  • Assist in assessment efforts including the educational outcomes of sanction-based learning and effectiveness of conduct officers
  • Compile monthly and yearly statistical code of conduct information and provide interpretations of the data for campus partners, while staying up to date with policies and compliance regulations
  • Partner with University constituents including but not limited to Residential Life, University Police Department, Counseling, Athletics, Facilities., Center for Student Engagement, Leadership and Orientation, Myatt Center for Diversity and Inclusion, Accessibility Resource Center, The Covid Task Force and Health Services
  • Serve as part of the administrative on-call/back up system for higher level residential and off campus incidents (as needed)
  • Serve in the absence of the Associate Dean of Students for interim suspensions where appropriate
  • Represent the Dean of Students Office in the community standards role on pertinent committees, task forces and projectsStudent Support and Wellness
    • Work with colleagues to support students toward a successful and safe experience at University of New Haven while serving on the CARE Team
    • Serve as member of the team while reporting student of concerns behaviors relating to the violations of the Code of Conduct
    • Advise and support students and parents regarding behavioral issues and other obstacles impacting student ability to meet goals
    • Advise and support students in conflict resolution skill development including attending CAPS related groups which strive for engaging in and resolving interpersonal and group conflict
    • Serve as conduct and wellness resource for commuter students. Including support and education of commuter students on off-campus rights and responsibilities
    • Serve as active member of Division of Student Life, collaborate on student programs of broader interests, community building, and leadership development
    • Monitor updates to best practices and federal, state, and local laws that may affect Student Conduct
    • Serves as the primary contact for parents, attorneys, outside advocacy groups, and other stakeholders for questions related to student conduct processes
    • Makes decisions regarding conduct outcomes and ensures that other decision-makers follow the Code of Conduct
    • Develop early intervention programs for students related to alcohol
    • Has primary responsibility to ensure that changes represent best practices
    • Support the Division of Enrollment & Student Success in meeting the divisional goals and mission of the University
    • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Dean of Students or VP for Enrollment and Student SuccessQUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIESRequired Qualifications:
      • Master's degree preferred
      • Experience working with various constituencies including students, faculty, alumni and other communities
      • 3-5 years' experience in student conduct, programming, student affairs or related field
      • Ability to travel on behalf of the University
      • Working knowledge of Title IX, FERPA, and student conduct and due process best practice
      • Valid driver's license
      • Fully vaccinated
      • Willingness to work non-traditional hours, including early morning, evening and weekends is necessary and expectedPreferred Qualifications
        • Prior leadership and supervisory experience
        • Excellent teamwork skills, ability to be flexible and work under multiple deadlines, collaboration skills, positive attitude. Excellent oral and written communication skills
        • Experience managing multiple priorities
        • Demonstrated record of critical thinking, leadership, and sound judgment
        • Experience working building strong collaborative partnerships with key stakeholders
        • Budgeting Experience
