Registered Nurse Job Description
Summary: Provide high-quality patient care, assess patient needs,
develop and implement individualized care plans, and collaborate
with healthcare teams to achieve optimal patient outcomes.
Job Responsibilities
* Assess patient's physiologic health status, including
gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, and
neurological health
* Conduct patient interviews, explain policies and procedures, and
review patient charts
* Determine patient's mobility, sensory deficits, prostheses use,
and skin condition, and adjust care plans accordingly
* Assess patient's level of pain and pain management
* Communicate and document patient's physiologic health status and
care plan
* Assess patient's psychosocial health status, including perception
of medical/nursing care and expectations
* Determine patient's coping mechanisms, knowledge level, and
ability to comprehend
* Identify cultural/ethnic requirements to reduce anxiety and
ensure patient satisfaction
* Communicate and document psychological status and care plan
* Identify patient outcomes, develop criteria for measurement, and
establish individualized patient goals
* Develop patient outcome statements and establish priorities to
achieve expected outcomes
* Coordinate cost-effective use of supplies, equipment, and
medication to achieve expected outcomes
* Implement care plans, maintain constant vigilance over patient
care, and ensure safety precautions are followed
* Exercise professional skills related to care plans, reassess
patients as needed, and revise care plans accordingly
* Administer prescribed treatments, use equipment necessary for
patient care, and provide emotional support to patients and
significant others
* Apply scientific principles in performing procedures, carry them
out safely, timely, and efficiently
* Evaluate care provided, measure effectiveness, and document
same
* Perform variance analysis related to outcome data for performance
improvement
* Design, implement, and evaluate systems to improve care in the
unit
* Keep accurate documentation of patient's treatment, activity, and
condition
* Collaborate with other care team members in planning and carrying
out treatment regimens
* Provide direction to other members of the care team, including
LPNs, patient care technicians, and nursing unit secretaries
* Accurately interpret and implement treatment regimens as
prescribed by physicians
* Assist physicians during treatments and/or diagnostic
procedures
* Perform grade I-IV pressure injury care, including preventive
skin care measures
* Apply simple dressings, maintain principles of aseptic technique,
and apply warm and cold compresses
* Perform irrigations and other procedures related to skin care as
necessary
* Administer medications correctly and safely, including
identifying medication actions, dosages, side effects, and
implications for patients
* Meet standards on medication administration examinations
* Prepare local solutions, prepare I.V. drips, and administer and
document medications correctly
* Participate in patient and family education, including providing
explanations of patient conditions, communicating assessment data,
and recognizing and utilizing health teaching opportunities
* Evaluate the effectiveness of teaching by feedback from patients
and families and document same
* Provide for early discharge planning and appropriate referrals
for post-hospital care
* Perform related duties as required.
